We can select the appropriate technologies, further process them in our facilities and stage them for critical assessment, either by the client or by us. Claims Discovery

There are many claims made for a component in a cell or battery, a battery itself, or the device that the battery is part of, and these claims become critical in marketing, sales, and consumer acceptance. For example, suppliers often have to rely on the battery maker’s feedback to understand the full range of benefits that their products will confer in a given cell or battery. Typically, battery producers only do quick tests to characterize a component.

Targeted Development of Cell Design for Client Application

Often, niche customers of batteries have to use commercial Li-ion cells that are not optimized for the customer’s application. Consequently, the customers do not have an optimal energy storage solution. Moreover, the cell manufacturer does not dedicate the resources to optimize a cell specifically for the customer’s application. In this scenario, CAMX Power will develop and demonstrate cell designs that would meet our client’s application requirements. The cells with the recommended designs can then be produced in larger quantities by the client’s chosen cell manufacturer.

Cell Design Assessment and, Optionally, Optimization for Performance

Given a client specified cell with its identified components, we would undertake an assessment of the cell design, specifically to answer the following questions: has the cell performance been optimized? what is limiting the cell performance of the client’s application? can there be improvements to the components or their design to further enhance cell performance?

Component Optimization

Given a client-specified or client-provided component, we would identify the component performance attributes that would be key to enhancing its value proposition. We would then work closely with the client to modify the component so as to maximize its performance in a cell environment for target applications. In addition, we will determine the optimum cell design for the target component, as well as, the best-mode implementation for the component.

Developers of Li-ion components (e.g., novel separators, anodes, electrolytes, electrolyte additives, etc) often do not have technical marketing data generated in multi-Ah cells. We offer to develop such data through in-situ (i.e., in-cell) evaluation of a client-specified cell component under a wide range of relevant test conditions. The deliverables would include a detailed report summarizing the cell-level test data and the conditions under which the data were acquired.

Assessment

Cell-based Assessment

The deliverables would include a detailed report summarizing the cell-level test data and the conditions under which the data were acquired. In addition, we will supply to our client's evaluation kits with 18650 or pouch cells, and coin cells fabricated with CAM-7 and well-matched components surrounding the target component so that the client can perform its own studies using our cells. In case the client wishes to make its own cells, we would supply the necessary components (e.g., coated electrodes) as well as detailed instructions.

Addressing these questions will involve a combination of component-level ex-situ measurements as well as constructing test cells with the desired formats and evaluating them in their target application environment, for instance, in an appliance. CAMX Power’s sister company, TIAX, has staff from many engineering disciplines and extensive laboratories where in-context assessment can be made. Deliverables will include a detailed report summarizing the opportunities for modifying the cell design or components employed to maximize the cell performance. The project could be extended to recommendations for optimizing the design for safety. CAMX Power has been at the forefront of studying Li-ion cell safety for more than a decade. In this time, CAMX Power has developed unique tools and methodologies to characterize battery safety. Using these tools and methodologies, client-provided cells or cell designs would be evaluated for safety and recommendations will be developed for improved cell safety.

CAMX Power will use a combination of small cell and full-size cell testing to develop the cell design for the customer application. Deliverables will include detailed reports, which the client can then transfer to its preferred cell supplier. CAMX Power will provide cells to the client for its independent assessment.

They will not perform the ‘heavy lifting’ needed for determining the conditions that will optimize the component’s benefit to their batteries. Therefore, the component’s true potential might not be identified or known. In this scenario, the component maker cannot recoup the full value of the component that it has.

We are well equipped to look for additional features or claims. Optionally, we can also substantiate the claims already being made.
CAMX Power can enable component suppliers to identify the unique aspects of their products to enable more effective marketing. Using a combination of simulations and experiments (including specific cell prototypes built and evaluated at CAMX Power), CAMX Power will identify the ‘value-add’ features of the supplier’s components. Deliverables will include detailed reports summarizing the key performance attributes of the component and associated data, which the customer can use in its own marketing literature. As part of this assessment, CAMX Power will also provide sample kits with the cells used for generating the data such that the component supplier can run its own tests, and optionally provide the cells to its customers.
